Poet Sarah Morris has written a beautiful poem inspired by one of my two AR/Paintings (“Tied Up At The Hospital”) in the show and has also recorded a reading of it which will be incorporated into the AR. Having Crohn’s Disease since birth, Leighton faced his mortality from a very young age. Countless invasive procedures, hospitalizations and surgeries helped drive him to dive deep into a lifelong quest to understand the workings of his body and his emotions. He creates emotional landscapes with simple lines and brilliant colors to capture complicated states of the human psyche, while exploring the possibilities of technology and human emotion being harnessed for the greater good. Leighton adds Augmented Reality (AR) to his paintings by combining his backgrounds in filmmaking and computer programming. Using the Daniel Leighton Art + AR app, viewers can experience additional dimensions of Daniel’s AR-enhanced paintings. As art critic, Shana Nys Dambrot, says about Daniel’s app, “[it] turns your device into a viewing portal into what it is tempting to describe as a parallel universe.” —– Participating groups: -LA AR + CV Meetup Group -AI LA Meetup Group -Los Angeles Virtual Reality Meetup Group -Film 360/VR/MR Meetup Group -IGDA (International Game Developers Association – LA Chapter) -Los Angeles WebVR Meetup Group -OC/LA Google, ARCore/Daydream, VR/AR Developers Meetup Group -Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality Content Creators LA Meetup Group -Los Angeles VR and Immersive Technologies Meetup Group -Exploring Mixed Reality Meetup Group -AR/VR Gaming and Marketing Meetup Group -LA Frontier Tech Meetup Group -ARLA (Another Reality Los Angeles) -Virtual Reality Workshops Meetup Group -VR Art & Design Workshop LA Meetup Group -Blacks In Gaming STAY TUNED and check back for updates. —— Related post. Leighton’s work combines his four primary areas of study: art, technology, film and the human condition. Leighton’s work merges the science of his artistic process with the compelling emotional journey that drives him to make art. Being faced with his mortality since childhood, the workings of his physical and emotional states have become revered roadmaps to tapping into the viewer’s own emotional landscapes. The paths of those roadmaps have been largely shaped by Apple technology, as Apple has provided the tools to facilitate Daniel’s artistic and technological journey since he got his first computer, an Apple II plus in 1981 at the age of 11. The January 21st event at the 3rd St Promenade Apple Store will include an artist talk with Leighton discussing the tension and drama in his work, a demo of his AR (Augmented Reality) app, a walkthrough of the apps he uses to paint (including Procreate) and a Q&A session. Large format, archival, museum-quality fine art prints of Leighton’s work will also be on display. #danielleighton Facebook.com/DanielLeightonArtist Twitter: DanielLeighton Instagram: DanielLeightonArt Related post. Once upon a time we hand wrote literature, used a typewriter, mailed letters, and waited patiently for film to develop preserving our visual memories. Today a text message, email, or digital photograph instantly and simply gratifies our exchanges and existence. Technology has changed everything we do from the household, to the work place, and socially. Beyond the featured wall hanging art work, we will also challenge the Create:Fixate community of artists to create visual imagery with only the use of social media, digital technology, and apps (Instagram, Vine, Facebook, Twitter, Thicket, Composite, Wurm, Art Rage, etc) which will be projected throughout the evening on various video screens. A juxtaposition of “That was then and this is now” will artistically elevate our appreciation of our progress as we forge ahead with technology driven lives. The exhibit will form a visual reminder of how modes of communication have evolved over time and why it’s important for artistic organizations to be around to document these trends. Related post.
